Hello, Friends!

In the infancy of this page, most of you will already know me because I asked you to "check out my blog!" If you were referred here or stumbled upon it somehow, allow me to introduce and explain myself.

I got my start in the restaurant business after the graphic design industry took a hit 17 years ago, causing me to lose two jobs in three months due to downsizing. The service industry saved my livelihood, and I've never looked back. Some of my favorite people in the world are friends from the industry, which makes sense. One has to be some % of crazy to enjoy and survive in this career for any length of time.

I've worked in a high-volume coffee shop, chef-driven restaurant, wine bar, craft beer bar, brew pub, brewery and neighborhood tavern. It won't surprise me if this is still my career when i'm ready to retire, if that's still a thing by then. And as much as I love working in the industry, I also love patronizing it. Going out to eat and drink is one of my favorite things to do. I've met so many characters and tried so many wonderful foods and beverages that I've broadened my palate both literally and figuratively.

My husband is also connected to the industry, but while I work behind a bar, he builds them. He owns Proletariat Woodshop, which focuses on fine woodworking for bars, restaurants and breweries. When the shut-down first started, I was doubly concerned because it affected both of our livelihoods for the same reason, with the majority of the hospitality industry being required to close its doors. We both understood firsthand how many jobs had been lost in this field, and those of us who were fortunate enough to still be working were experiencing even greater challenges than before with restrictions, constantly-changing rules and customers who felt like those things didn't apply to them.

I love this industry very much. knowing the amount of hard work goes into it, I am infuriated when people try to beat it down with bad online reviews, shitty or no tips, complaining, yelling, belittling or even threatening staff–dear god, you name it. I've seen the best and worst of people in this field. We all have. so, my goal for this blog is to uplift the industry that I know and value so dearly.

Especially in this time of utter insanity, a small thing I can–and want–to do is write about the places here in Chicago and the suburbs that have brought me joy, great conversation, flavor, people-watching and lessons, all in one fell swoop.

Service industry folks, this blog is for you. You all rock, and you should be appreciated. You are appreciated.

Cheers, Friends!
